Bryson Armstrong Is Winning Conference and National Awards
KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State redshirt freshman LB Bryson Armstrong has earned his second consecutive Big South Conference weekly award, this week being named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week. He was later tabbed STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week for his record-breaking performance last Saturday evening at Alabama State.
Armstrong, a product of nearby Kell High School, set a KSU single-game record with his 15 tackles in Saturday’s win 20-14 at Alabama State. Last week’s Big South Freshman of the Week, Armstrong also had two sacks, an interception and forced a fumble to go with his 15 stops.
The redshirt freshman becomes the fourth Owl in school history to earn a national weekly award, joining Dante Blackmon (College Sports Madness Defensive Player of the Week) in 2016, Taylor Henkle (STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week) and Derrick Farrow (HERO Sports Defensive Player of the Week) in 2015.
His second-quarter interception marked his fourth takeaway in just three career games. He had an INT and fumble recovery at Samford and recovered another fumble in last week’s win over Tennessee Tech. The Owls’ defense limited Alabama State to just 36 rushing yards and 195 total yards. His key sack with the Hornets threatening to score the game-tying touchdown helped secure the win on Saturday night.
Armstrong’s strong start to the season has him ranked nationally in several categories after three weeks, including second in the county in fumbles recovered (two) and solo tackles (25). The redshirt freshman also ranks 21st in the country in sacks per game (1.0) and 22nd in interceptions per game (0.7). For the season, Armstrong leads Kennesaw State with 31 total tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, two pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.
The Owls (2-1) return to Fifth Third Bank Stadium on September 30 following an open week to welcome non-conference foe North Greenville. The game is a “Gold Out” and the first 2,000 KSU students will receive a free Adidas gold t-shirt. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., and can be seen live on Peachtree TV and heard on ESPN Radio 1230 and 106.3 The Fan 2.
