Kennesaw State Football Gets Back to Work
KENNESAW, Ga. — Football is back! Spring practice begins for the Kennesaw State football team on Friday, February 24 and the Owls have 14 practices scheduled before the team’s annual Spring Game on Friday, March 24 at 7 p.m. at Fifth Third Bank Stadium on ESPN3.
On the heels of the team’s second consecutive winning season that culminated with an 8-3 record and coming a win shy of the Big South Conference title, the Owls enter the spring with momentum and increased expectations.
The program, which begins its third year in 2017, has won 14 games its first two season – the third-most among Division-I startup programs since 2008.
Brian Bohannon, a finalist for the 2016 Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award, welcomes back 17 of 22 positional starters, including Big South All-Conference selections QB Chandler Burks, WR Justin Sumpter, OL Zach Mitchler, DL Desmond Johnson, DL Tonarius Portress, LB Anthony Gore, Jr., and LB Izzy Sam.
“We’re anxious to get started and get our guys back on the field,” said Bohannon. “Although we had some great things happen last year, the season didn’t end the way we wanted, and we’re looking to take that motivation into the spring to prepare us for 2017.”
Kennesaw State’s spread option offense was lethal. The Owls finished the season ranked 10th nationally in total offense (479.5 ypg), ninth in scoring (38.9), third in rushing (320.6 ypg), ninth in third down conversions (49%) and eighth in fourth down conversions (70%). They paced the Big South Conference in each category.
The defense also put together sound numbers, ranking first in the Big South in scoring defense (21.7), rushing defense (130.3 ypg), third down conversions defense (32%), fourth down defense (32%), and second in total defense (321.8 ypg).
Kennesaw State opens its 2017 season on Thursday, Aug. 31 at Samford. The 2017 home opener is slated for Saturday, Sept. 9 versus Tennessee Tech. The Owls challenging non-conference slate also includes Montana State, Texas Southern Alabama State and North Greenville.
