Owls Overcome Penalties and Turnovers to Beat the Hornets in Montgomery

Montgomery, Al. – The Owls took to the field in Alabama looking to improve their 2017 record of (2-1) over the Alabama State Hornets who started the night (0-2).  The Owls did just that by overcoming penalties and turnovers and leaving Hornets Stadium with a 20-14 nail-biter.

The game started off uncharacteristically slow for the Owls as they failed to move the ball and rack up some points. Luckily the Hornets had the same troubles.

The second quarter saw the Owls take the lead with 17-points by touchdown runs from Trey Chivers and Shaquil Terry and a 37-yard field goal by Justin Thompson.

The Owls offense would stall for the rest of the game by adding only 3 more points in the last 30-minutes of play.

The problem for the Owls was unexpected turnovers and penalties during the game.  Two fumbles, 1-interception as well as six-penalties for 92-yards really hindered KSU’s offense.  “We shot ourselves in the foot” said Owls head coach Brian Bohannon describing their play late in the first half.

The Owls defense, especially current Big South Freshman of the Week, Bryson Armstrong was the star of the game.

Armstrong set an Owls single-game tackle record by wracking up 15-total tackles. This included and INT that led to a touchdown as well as a late tackle for a loss to push the Hornets back setting up a third and long.

This tackle lead to a 4-and-out to basically end the game with 17-seconds left in the game.

Keon Roman also added to the impressive defensive stats with 2-INT’s on the night. This was the first time an Owl had multiple interceptions in a single game since Dante Blackmon had three against Duquesne in 2016.

Justin Thompson had two field goals on the night and looks like he is dialed in after some trouble during the Samford game.

After the the 20-14 win in Montgomery the Owls travel back home for a bye week where they will adjust and heal up to get ready for North Greenville on Saturday Sept 30th at 3:30pm at Fifth/Third Bank Stadium.
