Two Owls Nominated for Big South Player of the Week Awards
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Liberty sophomore quarterback Stephen Calvert (Plantation, Fla.) has been named the Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week, while Monmouth senior defensive back Mike Basile (Brick, N.J.) has been selected as the Defensive Player of the Week for games played the opening week of the regular season. Flames’ sophomore placekicker Alex Probert (Andover, Minn.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week and Hawks’ redshirt-freshman running back Pete Guerriero (Lyndhurst, N.J.) is the Freshman of the Week.
Calvert set Big South single-game records with 44 completions, 60 pass attempts and 447 yards in Liberty’s 48-45 win at Baylor on Saturday. He threw three touchdown passes and rushed for a score. After Baylor took its first lead at 7-6, Calvert connected on a 40-yard TD pass to put the Flames back ahead. Late in the third quarter with the Flames trailing by four, Calvert threw his second touchdown pass and later scored his first career rushing touchdown on an 8-yard scamper to give LU a 10-point margin. His final TD strike came with 6:12 left for another 10-point advantage. Calvert hit 11 different receivers during the game and posted the school’s first 400-yard passing effort in 26 years.
Basile finished with a team-high nine tackles (eight solo) with 1.5 tackles-for-loss, an interception plus a pass break-up in the Hawks’ 31-12 victory over Lafayette. He was part of a defense that held the Leopards to minus-1 yard rushing on the day, in addition to just six points and 186 total yards until the final drive when the outcome was already decided.
Probert tied the Big South single-game record with four field goals and finished with 16 points in helping the Flames to their 48-45 win at Baylor. He was perfect on all eight kicks, and put Liberty ahead 6-0 with field goals of 27 and 41 yards. Probert added a 33-yarder in the second quarter and 31-yarder in the third stanza to put LU ahead by three each time. In addition, seven of his 10 kickoffs resulted in touchbacks.
Guerriero made an immediate impact in his first collegiate game, as he rushed for a game-high 139 yards on 21 carries with a pair of touchdowns. With the game scoreless for most of the first half, Guerriero broke through with a 16-yard TD run with 34 seconds left in the first half. He later darted 47 yards for a touchdown to put the game out of reach at 31-6. Guerriero averaged 6.6 yards per rush and also caught a pair of passes for 16 yards.
